The aesthetic: "Country meets the sea," say Kalama and Wickens. Kalama grew up on Oahu and Wickens in Santee. The wood on the far wall was salvaged from a 19th-century barn in Oregon, and the surfboards are the work of shaper Josh Oldenburg.

Kahana Kalama (left) and Billy Wickens. Note the round vintage canteen ($100) and the shelving made from dismantled scaffolding that belonged to a friend. "We went out to Spring Valley [for the planks] and took a wire brush to them and just brushed the crap out of them because they were covered in paint," says Wickens.

Still life of Levi's jacket sleeves, antique Singer sewing machine, and vintage fur. Forty of the owners' friends helped paint the walls of the store. "We owe it completely to our friends and the people who supported us," says Kalama. "There's no way it's just us." Photo: The Feast/Chantal Gordon

The name Aloha Sunday is a play on the term 'Aloha Friday,' used in Hawaii to welcome the weekend. The shop name is a nod to celebrating all days ahead. Photo: The Feast/Chantal Gordon

Men's tees by Ty Williams for Yacht Club. "Super sarcastic, whimsical, nautical," Kalama says of Williams' aesthetic. "He's a true artist." Photo: The Feast/Chantal Gordon

There are certain invitations that make us drop what we're doing and head straight to the action. This week's enticement is the new Aloha Sunday Supply Company, which opened at 5 p.m. today in North Park. (The grand opening party’s happening on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.)
The store is the retail vision of two alumni of the Jedidiah
label; Kahana Kalama’s the former brand manager and Billy Wickens
directed the warehouse, inventory, and shipping. In other words, it’s a
surfy kind of boutique synergy.
The stock is comprised of about one-third vintage and second-hand,
one-third mid-range labels, and one-third premium, higher-end goods.
Brands include the Critical Slide Society (an Australian surf label out
of New South Wales), Lovestone Jewelry from L.A., Yacht Club tees, and
San Diego's Ani Bikinis.
"People say, 'You’re opening a surf shop in North Park -- what are you
doing?'" says Kalama. "But they don’t realize how central North Park is.
Billy and I surf every day."
"To go from here to spots in Imperial Beach near the border then pop up to North County is totally reasonable," adds Wickens.
Above, we bring you the full photographic scoop on the new boutique,
including an exciting piece from Aloha Sunday’s private label.
