"I used to shop with my grandmother when I was a kid and she would buy these fabulous Pucci, Halston, and St. John pieces," says owner Michele Gonzalez. "One particular boutique had a giant pink velvet tufted centerpiece with all these gold fixtures on the wall. So I wanted to do a little homage to grandma." Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

On why she and Williamson chose the neighborhood they did, Gonzalez says, "We live in North Park and like to support local businesses ourselves. We kept coming back to this one space that was available. With Wang's opening down the street, with Seven Grand, all these places coming in from other cities — Palm Springs, Austin, L.A. — they did their research, so this feels like a safe spot for us." "People are liking that things that are a little more hand-selected," says Gonzalez. "They don't have to root through a lot of stuff to find a gem." Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

One of Gonzalez's favorite pieces right now is this skirt by Paganne, who was an erstwhile rival of Pucci's. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

A wide range of sunnies can be found here in the $40-$80 price range. Our favorite: the French round-framed glasses with the days of the week printed around the lenses. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

Another favorite of the owner: This Elizabeth Arden suit with hot pants to match. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

The day-to-day playlist: upbeat ’60s hits by Burt Bacharach and tracks by Blondie. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

There's even a swimwear section that includes this vintage '60s piece, along with on-trend crochet tops and cotton playsuits. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

Bauble hunters have been excited to find screw-back earrings here, Williamson and Gonzalez say. The collection is called Family Jewels: "My daughter’s 26 and her boyfriend snickered when he saw that," says Gonzalez. "I was like, 'Aw, I didn’t even think about that!' Vintage shoppers have been asking for strappy styles lately, like this pair of summer-white Fendi sandals. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

A gorgeous 'Jetson' bag from the 1960s, $68. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

An animal themed corner. Note the snake belt, leopard shoes, and feathered headpiece. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast

The one thing Gonzalez won't sell? A pair of platforms she owned as a sixth grader in the '70s, which have retractable roller skate wheels. Photo: Chantal Gordon/The Feast
Ms Vintage has opened its doors in North Park, selling psychedelic maxiskirts, '60s maillots, and Jackie-O-in-the-'70s suits. Surprisingly, this stash of vintage goods represents just a fraction of the owner's 10,000-piece archive.
We made a beeline to the store as soon as we heard. And walking into
the space was a little bit like walking into our own subconscious: from
the cotton candy pink walls to the black-and-white striped dressing
rooms (inspired by beach cabanas of the 1920s) to Sputnik light
fixtures.
“I’ve been collecting and selling vintage pieces for the past 15 years,”
says Michele Gonzalez, who owns the store with husband Steven
Willliamson. (They make up the “M” and the “S” in Ms Vintage.) They’d
been primarily selling their wares online. “I’ve amassed about 10,000
pieces; when you walk into our house, you don’t really see anything at
all. But the two extra bedrooms are stockpiled full of with bins of
clothing. I was shuffling the stuff from one room to the other when I
realized was never going to get through all [it]. So we decided to look
for a warehouse space. Then it turned into a warehouse space with a
showroom, then a showroom by appointment, then it turned into a place
that was open on the weekend — now here we are, open 5 days a week.”
Above, we take you on a tour of the new shop and point out some of our
(hint: prints ahead!) favorite pieces from the ’60s and beyond.
