Fall Trend 1: The return of the cape. "As soon as we get them in, they're gone," a Nordstrom Fashion Valley staffer tells us about that wonderfully theatrical outerwear piece, the cape. Also up in the Collectors section on the second floor, this Balmain jacket and leather Dolce & Gabbana skirt come in soulful, autumnal shades of green that store staffers say S.D. shoppers are responding to. As of two weeks ago, Nordstrom began stocking Jimmy Choo's men's line, which includes scholarly oxfords and boots done in distressed nubuck leather, and grown-up sneakers in croc that are already being bought up by S.D.'s fashion-aware males. Fall Trend 7: Flowing, '70s-inspired frocks. Doing an about-face from the tight, athletic dresses that dominated the last half of the last decade, designers are considering another kind of 'body-conscious.' Au courant dresses now flow around the body instead of constricting it, as seen in this Robert Rodriguez dress ($375) in the Savvy section. Fall Trend 8: Open-toed booties updated with tassels. The peep-toe bootie trend is still hanging on, but this season it's been freshened with fringe and tassels, as seen on the Isabel Marant runway and in Vera Wang's Lavender collection, which has shipped this boot (pictured) to Nordstrom's first floor. Fall Trend 9: Loooong sweaters with an expected peek of pencil skirt. To style up your new knits for Fall/Winter 2011, we recommend wearing his dreamy cableknit by Celine ($1,950) with a pencil skirt underneath, so that just a few inches of hem show at the bottom. Sure, it’s sunny and warm as ever, but a climate shift is already happening at stores here in S.D.: All those SALE placards have been replaced with signs blaring the word NEW.

That’s right, stores have received their shipments for fall, and we’re eager to dive into the knit and leather splendor. So we stopped into Nordstrom Fashion Valley, known locally for its spectacular Designer Preview, to find out the standout pieces for fall across the departments.

From distressed Jimmy Choo men's boots (that are selling well!) to cocktail frocks in wine hues to “bottle-green” blazers, these are the pieces — and their corresponding trends — you’ll need to look crisp for fall.
